I specialize in contemporary mixed media works on canvas that are backlit with LED light strips, essentially creating two separate pieces of art, united by a common theme or subject. In addition, I also create detailed charcoal, graphite, and ink drawings, some of which are often collaged onto the backlit pieces.

Most of my work begins with rice paper constructions molded onto canvas into bas-relief. Negative space is painted with acrylic paint. Other materials are then added such as: found or hand-crafted printed papers, hand embossed metals, corrugated cardboard, chicken wire, netting, fabric, metal leaf, watercolor paper, precious metal clay, polymer clay, and/or hand-blown glass. Finally, LED light strips are mounted directly behind the canvas.

Many of my pieces feature numerous shards of hand-blown glass, created by John Hudnut of the Gatherhouse in Frisco, Colorado. It was John’s idea to stick the thick glass bits completely through the canvas, to enable them to be lit brighter from behind.

I am always amused at the question, “Isn’t that dangerous?” asked by individuals about the glass protruding from my canvases. I like to reply that to date, no one has been injured by my art. Although I did not set out with the deliberate intention of provoking anxiety among viewers of my work, I have to admit, I do rather enjoy the perception that my art might be considered a just little bit “dangerous.” How many artists can make that claim?
